Updates

Update #3: We have moved in!

We’ve been on a bit of a hiatus here for the last two weeks, so with a reinvigorated spirit and a lot more tired limbs (all that tree climbing was hard!), we’ll offer a bit of an update.

On Wednesday March 22nd, we moved the press with the help of several friends. We had spent the days leading up to the 22nd preparing the studio to be just so. Too many U-Haul encounters later, we had accomplished what we had set forth the entire time. Except for the minor injury we’d had to the machine; we are confident in ‘our’ (the broad meaning of Our) ability to repair its damages. Our workshop is beautiful, and we whispered secret nothingness into all its hidden corners.

We’ve had several friends donate since the ‘close’ of the fundraiser, thank you! You’ll get your prizes and your little books, too!

Much love from the Northwest Press Crew! As always, write to us- we love fan mail!

Update #2: we are done with the fundraiser!

Wednesday March 15, 2012

Today we are done with the fundraiser. We’re pushing back the move-in date one week, while we prepare the space more and get every one together. Thanks so much for following us this far, and for contributing what you have! Though the fundraiser is done, we will most certainly be in debt, and welcome any donations you want to contribute. Please email or talk with us: foricannotbequiet(at)riseup(dot)net.

We raised just over half of what we need to purchase the equipment for the workshop. What we did not raise we are going to be lent by a well-endowed friend (Thank you!).

As we prepare our workspace, there are lots of things that we need. If you want to give us these gifts, we would welcome them!

  • space heaters
  • directed lighted (clip on/high power construction type)
  • dehumidifier

We’ve had a couple people offer to organize a few benefits (a secret cafe, a music night). Thanks! We will update you as these dates are firmed up, and we welcome any other offers friends have.

Our fundraiser month has also been a time of project planning and initiation. We’re in the process of collaborating with several friends and groups to print their work. We’re excited for these opportunities, and want to work with people directly to get writing onto paper. Please continue bringing this to us!

Update #1: we are 1/3 of the way!

Saturday February 25, 2012

Today we are one third of the way to our goal. (Actually $5 short!) And one third of the length of the fundraiser has elapsed. We’re still planning on March 15th as the day when we buy all the equipment and set up our new workshop, so we need to reach our goal by then! By now if you’re reading this you’ve probably already considered contributing. Consider it again, but also please pass word along to your friends, networks, re-post and share our appeal to help us circulate it further than we could be able to.

Once again we are so grateful for everyone’s support!

Below is some more information about the project.

In addition to the Multilith press, we intend to acquire
. . . plate-making equipment (which is needed to make the plates for the press)
. . . paper-cutting equipment
. . . a collating machine
. . . and a perfect binder (for making books)
We reached the total of $3,600 by summing the prices of these pieces of equipment. It will almost certainly end up costing somewhat more to get the project started, as there are all sorts of other needs and costs besides these.

We like the name of the press, but we also realize that no one is going to ever call it anything except “the press,” which is also what we already call it anyway.

We are not going to run as a business. By that we mean that we don’t expect to make serious money from printing — we do now and fully expect that in the future we’ll still have to work other shit jobs. As for the press, it would be delightful to be able to break even and buy lunch for the press operators. For the most part, we expect this project to be a labor of love and one of war, a project to which much of our lives will be devoted to making certain printed materials a reality.

What are these ‘certain’ materials? We are anarchists firstly — while also so much more. In our hearts lives a passion for anarchy, a desire to see our projects involved in the expansion of the beautiful idea and its strength in our city and elsewhere, and to see a great variety of anarchist projects and spaces flourishing around us. Of course the press can play a part in that, and that is a great part of our dream. With that said, we do not consider all projects equally simply for being anarchist; we are above all creatures of fancy and affinity, and one space may tug at the iron in our hearts while another does not. The Internet, however, is not the venue for that conversation. Find us.
